Risk & Issue Management

There are a number of ways and tools for managing risks and issues and these critical project disciplines have been given much attention in the project, program and portfolio management literature (P3M). While much theory exists and is usually aligned across the various “bodies of knowledge”, guidelines, frameworks and standards – in practice this is typically quite a chaotic set of activities.

Clearly, risk management is a central part of any organisation’s strategic management. It is the process whereby organisations methodically address the risks attaching to their activities with the goal of achieving sustained benefit within each activity and across the portfolio of all activities. The focus of good risk management is the identification and treatment of these risks.

Similarly, issue management is the process of identifying problems that impact a delivery schedule, and then assigning a priority and an action to its resolution. Issue resolution can include software defect resolution or can mean all the other obstacles that stand in the way of project (or programme) success.
